Draft Of My Magazine
Front Cover
This is the first draft of my front cover. What I think that has been a success for my front cover is the house style (blue, white and yellow), which is related to the image by the top she is wearing. I also think that all the colours stand out especially the blue. I find that the layout of my magazine does look like a music magazine, which is a positive, because if I challenge the codes and conventions it will look too different, and the audience might be put off it. I like the way that I have done my bar code with the price and date which in my opinion makes my magazine front cover look professional. In my view the plus sign that is on the left hand side of the front cover is very unique and I think that there is no point of inserting any text to identify what it is because I think it is self-explanatory. I think that the research I done before hand of front covers have extremely helped, as I had some idea of what a front covers looked like. I like how I have placed the artists name at the bottom and not at the top as it looks unique. The colour white used for the artists name stands out against the image. I have used a bold font for the cover lines as I wanted to follow the codes and conventions of the Vibe magazine as they have cover lines in bold. As in the Vibe issue of 'July 2007' I was inspired to use a feature from that magazine as on the right hand side it has coverlines; one coverline has colours that go with one specific coverline. For example in my front cover where it says Bruno mars + Trey songz is in a different colour to "new NO1 single what a girl". The use of the two colours makes it more appealing and eye catching. However there are many things that I need to change. The background colour is dull and boring and I also need to change the image as my model looks unhappy and the models hair looks cropped out. I will also need to change the colour of the date as it is hard to see it and increase the banner font size. The font of 'Sarah Ribeiro' and 'Urban Vibez' needs to be changed as the font does not relate to the urban genre of the magazine. I believe the classical font used on 'Sarah Ribero' confuses the genre of the magazine.
Contents Page
This is the first draft of my contents page. There are some things that look good. For example I like the colour scheme which matches the models clothes as the colour blue stands out against the grey background. I also like the image which has been took from a high angle to make the artist look as if she is not as famous such as Beyonce and people still look down at her and need audience support to get her through her music career. I have also broken down the word 'Contents' as the Vibe magazine follows this throughout there contents pages. I have used only one image as I wanted to follow the codes and conventions of the Vibe magazine contents page as they usually use only one big image of an artist. However I will be going against the codes and conventions of the Vibe contents page as I feel my contents page has too many blank spaces and looks dull and boring. I will like to include two images on my contents page, almost following the codes and conventions of the Kerrang contents page house style but keeping only two images so that my magazine does not cross genres as by looking at the Kerrang contents page the contents page has a lot of images.
In addition there are many things I would like to change on my contents page such as the font style. I believe the italic font is going against the codes and conventions of a Vibe magazine because the fonts are more bolder and strong relating to the hip hop/ R&B genre. I will change the font style to a bolder, stronger font and I will change the colour of the page numbers of cover lines as they do not stand out. I need to add text under the cover lines to make it look like a typical contents page and follow the codes and conventions of font types to match the genre of my magazine. The background colour is too dull as it makes the contents page look unprofessional and lifeless. The layout of the contents page is not structured to meet the codes and conventions as the contents page is too spacious. The cover lines should be moved to the right hand side with more text and the image should go on the left hand side with another image to make the contents page look more busy and interesting.
Second Contents Page Draft
As I had made my first contents page draft to look different and challenged the codes and conventions I played around with the contents page on photoshop and came up with the contents page above. I believe that the contents page started to build up with a more professional look to it as the first contents page looked simple, dull and did not look proffesional. However I still need to to improve the contents page by making the cover line description to be shorter and the cover lines to be bold.
Double page spread
This is the first draft of my double page spread (dps). The successful thing about my double page spread is the image which has been cropped out and placed in front of the grey banner which gives the image a 2D unique effect. The double page spread challenges the codes and conventions as there is more text than image. However there is still a lot of space and I think I have enough space to add more text. The capital L follows the codes and conventions as many magazines start the articles with the first letter being a capital. I chose to do this so my magazine will look realistic and typical. However I want to make the title bigger so it stands out more and overlap the MY on top of TIME so it looks like a funky R&B magazine and not a simple straight forward magazine. I noticed that there were spelling mistakes which I will need to correct. The banner I have created on top and bottom looks dull and I will need to change the colour. I will place the same colour on the banner that I will have as my front cover background as I want to keep my magazine consistent throughout. I will make the quotes bolder and more eye catching as they do not stand out as much as they should.
