Market Research Questionaire
I made an online questionaire and included my questionaire on social websites such as facebook so people could answer my questions on my questionnaire. My results show clear detail of how many people purchase magazines and what they want in a magazine. This will help me to make my own magazine front cover, double page spread and content page as I will keep the feedback I got from my survey in consideration.
Ideology
I have planned out my Ideology for my music magazine as this will help me to get an idea to relate to my magazine before I create it so that I will know what to include inside my music magazine such as unique selling points, codes and conventions, language used, colours and images. Creating an Ideology has helped me as I now know what to include in my magazine. The impact that the ideology will have is that I can always refer to it, when i'm creating my magazine and for who I am creating my magazine for.
Content and double page spread analysis
I have analysed content pages so that it will give me an idea of what a content page should include for it to look like a content page apart of a magazine. This has gave me an idea of what to feature in my content page which I will be producing and if I want to for or against the codes and conventions of the music magazine content page. For example the Vibe magazine front cover and content page keeps a consistent layout keeping the'V' which is from the masthead called 'Vibe' and the colours of the front cover are used again in the contents page. 'Contents' is not written in one sentence on the contents page and has been broken down in three lines.
Having the word 'Contents' to be written in three lines represents the Vibe magazines layout as contents is written in three lines throughout their content pages. If readers of the vibe magazine were to look at the contents page on its own they will be aware that the contents page is from a vibe magazine as the vibe magazine keeps the contents to be in three lines on every Vibe contents page. For my magazine to follow the codes and conventions of the vibe contents page I will also have the word 'Contents' broken down into three lines and I will make the font big and bold just like the vibe magazine. The vibe magazine uses one big image of the artist which is normally a mid shot or a full body. I will be breaking the codes and conventions of the vibe magazine by using more than one image on my contents page and following the codes and conventions of the Kerrang contents page images.
Kerrang uses many images on the contents page which fills up the page and makes the reader want to read on to the articles related to the images which is
why I want to include more than one image on my contents page.
I have also analysed double page spreads so that it will give me an idea of the codes and conventions of the layout to use on my double page spread. I will be using one big image of the artist as the double page spreads of a Vibe magazine includes one big image of the artist and use the rest of the space for my article. However I will be using an interview by the artist for my article which is not often done in the Vibe magazine as my magazine is targeted at teenagers who enjoy reading about artists and their personal matters through interviews. I will also be including quotes from the artist on my double page spread as this is done in the Vibe double page spreads and I want to follow the codes and conventions of the double page spread layout.
Front Cover Analysis
By analysing front covers of different magazines it has gave me an overall idea of the codes and conventions to make it look like a music magazine. I now know a music magazine needs a catchy heading, big image of either an artist or model and information on what will be included inside the magazine. By analysing different magazines it has helped me to produce a music magazine front cover of my own on Photoshop. I have looked at Vibe as a music magazine front cover as I think Vibe will be suitable for my genre. I want my magazine to have a similar style to the Vibe magazine and to do this I will need to have my masthead behind my main image as Vibe uses this kind of house style throughout different magazine front covers. I would need a mid shot image to be placed on my front cover, in front of my masthead as Vibe generally follows this idea throughout their front covers such as on the first front cover which I have analysed has a mid close up shot of his face which takes up the page. The masthead should be big, bold and eye catchy. The name of the artist featured in the image on my front cover should be placed next to or on top of the image. I need to follow the codes and conventions of the Vibe magazine for my magazine to resemble the Vibe magazine.
I have used publisher to create a school magazine front cover and content page.
Front cover: I have used the colour red as it stands out more and resembles the colour of plumstead manor school uniform. I have also used an image of two girls opening their result letters as the article is about plumstead manor negus results day. I have used a mid shot as I wanted the image to be focused on the two girls opening the results day letters.
I could include more images on my front page cover of my magazine as many teenagers like to see images more and read less as my magazines intended audience are college students. The title of my school magazine is very long and by looking at front covers of school magazines I know the codes and conventions of the titles being short such as the title 'Plum line' which is short yet simple. In addition by looking at the front covers of school magazines I know the codes and conventions of the layout. The masthead should be short and simple and there should be more text and articles.
Contents page: I have created a simple layout for my contents page as I don't want my magazine to look very crowded. I have also used red on my contents page to create a constant house style. I have also used three images on my contents page showing a student working on the mac computers, an image of a mac computer and pencils. I have used the image of the mac computer because of the new stock plumstead manor have provided for the students which enables them to use the macs and do their coursework on them just like the student is doing in one of the images. Here I have used a mid shot to show the girl sitting down on a computer. I did not want to focus on the girl so much as having the image in a mid shot focuses on the computer and the girl together. I have used an image of just a mac computer as I wanted the readers to be focused just on the mac computer which emphasises on the new product which has been provided by the school. For my third image I used a high angle close up shot of the book and pencils. By using a high angle close up shot the readers it catches audience attention as it feels as if they are looking at the new pencils and books which have arrived in the school as a learning source. If I was to do the contents page again I would change the layout as it does not meet the codes and conventions of contents pages. I would add more articles to it and change the layout of the images.
I have also included a free microsoft office disk inside for students. I have included this so students can use mircrosoft office to do their work on it. I got the idea of including a free gift in the magazine by going to the shops and looking at children and teenage magazines which have a gift inside them as this attracts children and teenagers to buy the magazine.
I have kept my article simple and informal so that it would be easier to read for college students as some teenagers do not like to read formal articles e.g. such as the guardian newspaper so I have kept my magazine article simple. If I was to rewrite my article again I would I would include more articles about new subjects and after school clubs which are taking place in the magazine so that my magazine can meet the codes and conventions as magazines have many articles inside it which makes it a magazine to read.
